Bangalore: The Karnataka government signed a pact with Chennai-based infrastructure company Marg Ltd to build an airport at Bellary with an initial investment of Rs 110 crore. The project is part of the state government’s plan to establish a network of airports across the state via the public-private participation mode to invite industrial investment.”With a steel hub planned in Bellary and an estimated one million tourists visiting Hampi annually, the company sees potential for the airport though it expects initial air-traffic to be low,” GRKReddy said.
“Marg plans to invest an additional Rs 120 crore at a later stage to build a second runway to accommodate bigger aircraft,” said GRK Reddy, managing director, Marg Ltd. Construction of the first phase is expected to be completed in 24 months. Earlier during the year, Marg entered into an MoU with the Karnataka government to build an airport at Bijapur on a build-operate-transfer basis.
“A bulk of the industrial investments committed during the state government’s recent global investor’s meet would be in Bellary,” said state infrastructure and tourism minister G Janardhan Reddy Marg’s other infrastructure projects include the development of the port at Karaikal and an SEZ near Chennai.
